Why is Pentecost such a big deal?
Pentecost is a big deal because it marks the day that the disciples received the spirit, and made the decision, to continue the work of Jesus.
No longer afraid they took on the challenge of Jesus' words:
“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
John 20:21
God asks us to take up the challenge to serve others and help to create the reign of God here on earth.
The 'reign of God' is where the order of things is as God intends,
it means everyone putting God first.

Our opportunity to be more than just a Catholic in name
but to really become what God knows is possible - is a scary thought.

Pentecost also marks the day that we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit.
We often say that 'The Holy Spirit is given to us',
but have you stopped to think what that actually means?!?!

but have you stopped to think what that actually means?!?!
The gift of the Holy Spirit means that we are never alone, it means that God is always with us on our journey, it means that God works with us, so we can live in hope that by doing our part, we are working with God to help build the world that God wants for us.'
Our response to Jesus' Resurrection is hope in a different way of life and a commitment to live out this out
in our every day.
WHAT HAPPENED AT PENTECOST?
|
|
- Jesus said ‘The spirit will teach you everything and remind you of what I said when I was with you.’ (John 14:25-26)
- It was this experience at Pentecost that allowed the frightened disciples to understand the feelings and confusion they had felt after Jesus' death. It gave them courage to talk about Jesus and spread the Good News of God's reign.
- Te Wairua Tapu (The Holy Spirit) continues to inspire us to be like Jesus - to be kind, generous, respectful and loving and to act with justice and peace.
The Fruits and Gifts of the Holy Spirit?
A way to remember the difference between the gifts and fruits of the spirit is to imagine yourself as a tree. The gifts of the spirit are what we open and use to feed our lives when we interact with people and when we make choices in our everyday. The fruits of the spirit are qualities that are visible in our lives if we use the gifts we have been given.
